Google has just released there latest iteration of the Chromebook a laptop running Chrome OS. Google’s new laptop has many appealing features and looks like a nice laptop but the question remains will people buy the new Chromebook over a well know laptop brand?
When you first see the Chromebook it makes you think of an MacBook Air which is not surprising because the Air is one of the most popular small laptops. Immediately after noticing the design of the Chromebook you see the price tag of $249 which is a mind blowing price for a laptop. But this is not a normal laptop it runs on a Google Operating system in which everything you do is done from the internet. The Chromebook specs from Google’s site:
11.6’’ (1366×768) display
0.7 inches thin – 2.42 lbs / 1.1 kg
Over 6.5 hours of battery
Samsung Exynos 5 Dual Processor
100 GB Google Drive Cloud Storage with Solid State Drive
Built-in dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n
1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0
On the laptop everything is done in the Chrome web browser so you use Google Drive to store files and you can write and view documents, presentations, and spreadsheets. You can get others apps from the Chrome web store which has thousands to choose from. You can even access your Google Calendar, Gmail, maps, and YouTube. You login with your Google account so anything you do will be synced with that account and it allows more than one person to use the laptop without privacy concerns. When you log out and log in with a different account the apps and documents will be different. This laptop offers many features for someone or a family as long as they don’t need to use applications that are not online. If you use an application on your current computer like Adobe Photoshop, or Quicken you would not be able to use those on this laptop you would have to find an online application or website that offers the same capabilities.
Google is touting the Chromebook is a laptop for everyone no matter if you are a business person on the go or a family with several people sharing one laptop, Google says the Chromebook is the one for you. And to this I say maybe, it depends on what you need your laptop to do if you are a family and want a laptop to go to websites, play games online, or pay bills online then yes this laptop is a great deal and you should think about buying one. A word of warning even though the Chromebook does have a desktop it is not a real desktop all your files will be stored online and it may take a while to get used to running all your apps in a web browser. But I think if you want to get a laptop at that price you should look into buying a Chromebook.
The Chromebook may be a good option for any college student that needs a laptop to take to class and use for notes and homework. The fact that everything is stored with your Google account would make accessing your data easy on any computer the only question would be if your school requires any special applications that you have to use. If not than the laptop for $249 would be a great basic laptop for you to use.
The Chromebook is an interesting idea and if you want to read more about it you should go to the links below and read what Google says and what people have written about it.
